VI MISION MEDICAL-OPHThALMOLOGICAL 2013 IN COLCA VALLEY

(ATENDED   PATIENTS)

Conclusions:

-          We achieve 50 % of our target :

People with Cataracts =    28

Surgery cataracts        =   14

-           Because many elders live alone  and don´t have family  for help in  their checking post surgery

-          The Ministery of Health and another ONGs works in Colca Valley,  have a Program for cataracts

-          The medical campaign had a great social coverage. We managing to attend to 978  patients

-          We attended simultaneously in three different places: Center Of Health Chivay, Clinic Casa Chapi and Puesto de salud  Yanque – Achoma

-          The distribution of lenses, the attention in pediatrics, dental and ultrasound scan had a great demand in the population.

Celebrity Sales

Tim and Teresa Vincent owners of Celebrity Sales and their son and daughter in-law Gabe and Jessica White of Oregon Alpaca Farm have supported Quechua Benefit for the past 8 years. They have made the annual charity auction a center piece of Quechua Benefits fund raising effort. To date, the auction sponsored by the Vincent’s has raised $575,485.13 for the Quechua alpaca breeders of Peru. That’s a “lotta” love.

Tim is always looking for ways to make the Futurity better. Some of you might not remember but it was at the Futurity that Championship classes were first introduced into the alpaca show ring in the United States. It was also the first show to feature prize money and place a spotlight on genetically important herd sires.

In the tradition of always trying to be better, the Futurity offered Quechua Benefit 3 separate opportunities to auction off donated items at this years event and he issued this challenge to Quechua Benefit: “bring us some fun auction items; lets change it up a bit”. Quechua Benefit responded with several pieces of iconic memorabilia. Most notably a Country Legends Guitar autographed by 15 country and western stars, including Garth Brooks, Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rodgers. As a result Quechua Benefit raised $73,885.00, which almost tripled last year’s donations.

Snowmass Alpacas

The auction opened with a video produced by Alpaca Culture of footage brought back by Nik Skinner of Snowmass Alpacas and introduced by his sister Heidi. The Skinners single handedly raised all of the funds necessary to build the Snowmass Health Center at Casa Chapi. Heidi and Nick were there as volunteers on the 2012 Quechua Benefit medical mission for the grand opening of the Health Center. You can view the video by clicking here.

Red Granite Alpacas

The country guitar that was auctioned has its own love story attached to the winning bidder. When they first met, Marc Milligan was enthralled by the guitar playing of his future wife Sharon. The love affair blossomed into a marriage of 40 years and when Marc saw the Country Legends guitar, signed by Sharon’s favorite country stars, at the Quechua Benefit auction he realized that he had found the perfect 40th anniversary present. Today they own Red Granite Alpacas and you can tell by their smiles in this photo that this has been a very happy marriage.

The crowd was into the auction and when Mike Safley announced that he was asking generous souls in the audience to pledge $1,000 to support a kid at Casa Chapi and that Bob Weintraub of Cloud Hollow Farm and Maine Top Mill would match with $5,000 if we received a minimum of 5 pledges from the audience and 5 hands immediately shot in the air; Marc & Sharon Milligan, Pamela Ray, Harriet Neubauer, Neil Padgett and Deborah Bailey; a hat tip to Richard Cruanas of La Finca Alpacas for giving Quechua Benefit the idea for a hand raise at a previous auction. The ever generous Pamela Ray of Xanadu Farm Alpacas, the Futurity Banquet Sponsor, kept raising her hand until she had secured the Beatles Abbey Road album cover autographed by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Rhonda Deschner of Tierra Prometida won the Rolling Stones guitar autographed by Mick Jagger and the entire band. Rhonda’s son is currently enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston and is an aspiring song writer.Nancy Ogan of Double “O” Good Alpacas purchased two elite breedings to Accoyo America Road Warrior and Accoyo America Kashmir donated by Lynn Edens of Little Creek Farm Alpacas and Accoyo America East. Phil and Chris Switzer of Switzer-Land Alpacas donated 10 days in their Maui condo and it sold twice, once to Steve Johnson of Paca Paradise Ranch and a second time to Tim Timmerman of Aussie Acres Alpacas after the auction concluded.

Bruce and Myndee Jung of Rock Creek Suris purchased almost 500 pieces of alpaca apparel donated by Otto Kuzynski. When Daryl Gohl asked the young couple if they had a farm store Bruce replied “we do now!”

Scott and Debbie Miller of Crescent Moon Ranch donated a scholarship to their 2013 Education with a Destination event in Bend, Oregon, August 22-25 and Tony Tindol and Shannon Osteen of King an Prince Alpaca Farm snapped up the opportunity to visit the scenic vistas of Eastern Oregon. Quechua Benefit is now about half way to their 2013 fund raising goal $275,000. We still have a long way to go but with the love and support of each of you we will continue to succeed.

It is a beautiful Sunday afternoon here in Indiana.  The sun is shining, the birds are singing and there is a smile on my heart.  Spring?  Yes, but that’s not all.  I have seen the face of God today, but not where you might expect.  The face of God for me today was clearly one and the same with the face of an eight-year-old young lady named McKayla Adair.

Several months ago, I spoke about Quechua Benefit in a small country church near my childhood home.  Salem Community Church is in the tiny town of Wilmot, Indiana and is in the middle of nowhere by some standards.  There are roughly twenty-five people in their congregation, which is made up of all ages.  When I spoke, God chose to move that little congregation through McKayla, who shines as bright as the springtime sun with her love for God.

Today, I went back because McKayla had been on a mission.  She designated March as “collect toothbrushes and toothpaste month” and encouraged her church family to collect toothbrushes and toothpaste for the children at Casa Chapi.  They rallied around her mission and donated 206 toothbrushes and 170 tubes of toothpaste!  When I went to thank her and her church family today on behalf of Quechua Benefit, I asked McKayla what it was that made her want to collect the dental supplies.  She didn’t hesitate one second and answered, “God laid it on my heart so I just did it.”   I asked her how it was that she thought God got her attention about the needs of the children.  She said that she when she saw their teeth in the photos she knew they needed help.  She was also adamant to tell me that she didn’t want the glory, because the glory belonged to God.

I asked her if she knew the scripture from Isaiah 11:6, “And a little child shall lead them.”  She “sort of” knew about that and I explained to her that I wasn’t trying to give her the glory, but instead wanted to share her story, because it might help others to hear God’s voice calling them to help the children at Casa Chapi, too, and she agreed .

McKayla is the daughter of Jerod and Charity Adair and she lives on a family farm with her parents and her brother, Kaden, and a baby sister, Rain.  McKayla and Kaden are homeschooled and have written letters to the children at Casa Chapi that will accompany the toothbrushes and be translated by Dick Miller.  Thank you to Dick, who has graciously agreed to translate and to transport the dental supplies to the children in April of 2013.  McKayla and Kaden hope to hear back from the children at Casa Chapi so that they might connect child to child.

When I left today, McKayla, Kaden their grandfather helped me carry the boxes to my vehicle.  McKayla gave me a hug and I told her that maybe someday she would be with me in Peru.  Her smile eclipsed the sun as she gave me a hearty thumbs up!  Thumbs up to you McKayla for teaching us all that indeed, a little child shall lead them.

Gemstone is a beautiful bay black female with a good suri phenotype. She has correct conformation with substantial bone structure and a typey suri head. Her fleece is soft to the touch, lustrous, and well locked. Gemstone’s upright carriage gives her a striking presence. She is inquisitive in nature and has inherited a sweet disposition from both sides of her pedigree.

Gemstone has been an easy keeper since birth. She weighed 15 1/2 pounds at birth, her IgG was 2,315 at 24 hours and she already weighed 33 pounds at one month of age, more than doubling her weight.

Gemstone’s mother, Governess, is an award winning alpaca. She won 1st place at the 2008 VAOBA show and 1st place at the 2010 Suri Network Suri Spin-Off.
