It does not seem possible that we have been back only five weeks since our 2011 Mission Trip to Peru. We broke another record with 65 participants; 35 Americans, 3 Canadians, 12 Australians and more than 15 Peruvians and Peace Corp workers working over 17 day period in 10 different Colca Valley towns. We saw over 2,300 medical, dental, cataract and optometry patients. This year we added two new activities 1) wheelchair fittings and distribution and 2) a construction work team at Casa Chapi.

More than 65 people from 4 countries worked in 10 Peruvian villages on the mission which required government approval from 4 government agencies. Prior to the mission Alejandro Tejeda, project manager for Quechua Benefit, spent 7 days with a Peruvian Optometrist screening 390 potential cataract patients. The Australian Insight Peru, eye care team saw 702 patients, the dental team saw 197 patients, and the combined Canadian and U.S. medical team saw 916 patients. There were 447 children seen by the Pediatricians alone and in addition there were a total of 105 ultrasounds performed, for a grand total of 2349 people served. Click here to see the mission teams in action. Click here to see a slide show prepared by mission participant Tim Sheets.
Most of us take wheel chairs for granted. We see them when we get off the airplane or go to the hospital or our local mall. That is not the case in the highlands of Peru. Wheel chairs are rare. Some of the patients who received chairs on this mission were brought to the clinic in a wheelbarrow. We visited and elderly woman who along with her donkey, lived on the floor in a hovel that was her home. She crawled everywhere unable to stand. Angie had to sweep up the donkey dung before the woman could maneuver the chair we brought her. Can you imagine her joy? We would like to thank Wheels for the World who donated and shipped 50 wheelchairs to Arequipa, Peru for us to use on our mission trip. Angie Kidd was responsible for arranging the gift and coordinating this new component of our medical treatment program for the Quechua people. Click here to see the wheel chair mission team.
QB would like to build two more by the end of 2012. The cost to sponsor an entire cottage is $20,000. The Miller grant has attracted another $5,000; we need $10,000 more to begin construction on the next cottage. You can contribute any amount and your name will go on the dedication plaque with the other donors at the cottage. Please click here to donate now.
We have been mightily supported in this endeavor by Chris and Phil Switzer who were Antonia’s supporters even before Quechua Benefit got involved. The Switzer’s donations support 4 months of the program each year and Dick and Jane Miller support another month each year. If you would like to support a month or more the cost is $1137.00 per month and you donation would serve about 7500 meals. Click here for more information or here to donate now.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

We also had a chance to visit the various Peruvian charities that we support; 1) Allin Kawsay Orphanage in Coaza 2) Mosque Runa Orphanage in Macusani 3) Sister Antonio’s Feeding Program in Yanque and 4) Father Franz’s Orphanage in Imata.

While in Arequipa we interviewed potential staff for Casa Chapi Children’s Village and made the decision to open the Village with 12 children in one of the cottages on March 2012 to coincide with the start of the Peruvian school year. Click to see Casa Chapi’s campus.

While on our trip Perry and Lisa Darley of Maranatha Alpaca Farm generously pledged $20,000 to sponsor the construction of the Chapel at Casa Chapi. We would like to thank them for their commitment and I like the connection of their farm name with the purpose of our chapel. Maranatha means “Even so, Come Lord Jesus” and it is especially fitting for this farm to fund the chapel.

Dick Miller went on his first mission with us and together with his wife Jane made a challenge grant of $5,000 before he left Peru. The Miller’s donation has already attracted $5,000 of additional giving and they hope it will attract $10,000 more from donors to complete construction of a 3rd children’s cottage. The Millers who have been long time supporters of Quechua Benefit also donated the money necessary to fund Sister Antonia’s feeding program for a month and provide 7500 meals at the Church in Yanque.

At a special community recognition dinner for Quechua Benefit the town of Yanque offered the free and clear title to a substantial piece of property near their town square for the purpose of constructing a domestic violence safe house. Quechua Benefit would be the project manager and partner with the local women’s association to create a much needed service to the community. Domestic violence is one of the most significant problems in Peru. Quechua Benefit will be looking for partners to make this dream a reality. Click to see the photo gallery.

We are also entering discussions with a gold mining company on the possible funding of a mobile dental van to be used on our year-round dental campaigns throughout the altiplano region.

We would like to thank Jim Beck and his employer, Hatzel & Bueler Inc, Electical Contractors out of Philadelphia, PA for their donation of battery operated DeWalt power tools valued at $5,000 to the Casa Chapi Vocational Shop.

We would also like to thank Magical Farms for their donation of $10,000 from their Breeders Choice Sale & Auction. We also appreciated the opportunity to have the Quechua Benefit booth at their event and meet many of you.

While we were in Peru our first 40′ ocean container arrived in port with equipment and supplies for Casa Chapi. It has since been transported to Chivay and unloaded temporarily in the Pucara Kitchen/Cloud Hollow Dinning Hall. We are now working on filling a second container as Children of Abraham in Indiana which has located two hospitals that are closing who have much needed equipment for our optometry clinic at the Snowmass community Health Center. If you have items or ideas for items to include in the container, please contact one of the Board members or representatives.

Mike Safley and I were privileged to be able to meet with Elena Barreda, daughter of Don Julio Barreda, and confirm that she will be attending the Alpaca Futurity in Grand Island, Nebraska this year. We will be unveiling a bust of her father with Shere Khan that will be placed in the reflection pool garden at Casa Chapi. Quechua Benefit would again like to thank Greg Mecklum and Diana Yates for their gift of 60 unrestricted breeding’s to their Champion Herdsires to be rolled out over the next three years. This will create an educational fund for children of the altiplano as well as the dedication of Casa Chapi in the memory of Don Julio Barreda.

Season’s Greetings- Don’t forget the Reason for the Season!

Editor’s note: In September, Quechua Benefit, Indiana UM-related Children of Abraham and Missionary Association Working for a World Without Hunger, joined forces to load a 40-foot container full of medical and other supplies for the Casa Chapi Children’s Village that Quechua Benefit is building in Chivay, Peru. This is the story of what miraculous things can happen when we say “yes” to God. Writer Angie Kidd is in Peru as Together goes to press.

High in the Andes Mountains in South America in 1996, one man asked another man a simple question, “Will you help my people?” The man could have answered that the job was too big or that he lived too far away or that he just did not have the time, but instead, the man said, “Yes.”

The man who asked was Don Julio Barreda, an alpaca farmer from Peru. The man who said yes was Mike Safley, an alpaca farmer from the United States. From that one simple question, a relationship was born that now helps thousands of Don Julio Barreda’s people every year. His people are the Quechua and the organization that Mike Safley founded in that one word “yes” is Quechua Benefit. This is the story of how powerful “yes” can be when spoken from the heart.

Quechua Benefit

I first encountered Quechua Benefit in 2007, while traveling in Peru with Wheels for the World. I am an occupational therapy practitioner by vocation and an alpaca owner for fun. The opportunity to take my therapy skills into the mission field, especially a field full of alpacas, was a fairly easy “yes” to say. I had never travelled for mission before, but it only took once with the Wheels for the World Arequipa team to fall in love with the experience. I spent three amazing weeks in Peru that year with the mission and traveling on my own to attend the International Alpaca Fiesta. It was there that I learned of Quechua Benefit and the Quechua people.

The Quechua people are the native Peruvian Indians and they were the first domesticators of the alpaca. They are the foundation that alpaca owners all over the world stand upon today. Unfortunately, that foundation has crumbled for the Quechua people and they are now the “poorest of the poor” in Peru.

When Don Julio Barreda asked for help, Mike understood the relationship of the Quechua people to our current alpaca industry and his heart was opened to the Quechua people, especially the children. He has spent the past fifteen years building Quechua Benefit and today it supports a soup kitchen that feeds hundreds of people daily; a children’s village called Casa Chapi that is currently under construction to house up to 100 children ages five to fourteen; an orphanage that will house another 100 children; and medical missions that include dental, cataract and general medicine and more.

Yes

Mike is not the only one who said “yes.” The Revs. Byron and Candy Kaiser said “yes” to make the move to Ligonier to pastor our United Methodist church. Byron and his co-founders at UM-related Children of Abraham said “yes” to the development of a medical outreach that ships millions of dollars of supplies to other countries who are in great need.

The people at Missionary Association Working for a World Without Hunger said “yes” to starting an organization to assist with the transportation of goods into the country of Peru. The volunteers who work with all of these missions say “yes” every time they step up to get their hands busy for God.

In January 2008, Quechua Benefit announced the building of a medical clinic in the Casa Chapi Children’s Village. Because I knew of Children of Abraham from Pastor Byron, I contacted Quechua Benefit and asked another simple question.

“Would you like me to connect you with Children of Abraham to see if they can help to supply the equipment for the medical clinic?” Another “yes” happened and 20 months later on Sept. 17 of this year, a miraculous undertaking came to completion. It was an overwhelming day to see Children of Abraham, Quechua Benefit, Missionary Association Working for a World Without Hunger, alpaca owners and breeders and many other volunteers come together to load a forty-foot ocean-going container that hopefully has arrived in Peru carrying medical and other supplies for the children who will call Casa Chapi their home.

I am currently in Peru for the fourth time to work again with Wheels for the World and Quechua Benefit. This time, I will have the honor of leading a team to bring these two missions together to offer the gift of mobility along with the gift of the Gospel to the Quechua people in the Colca Canyon. I wonder what opportunities God will give me to say “yes” on this trip. Whatever they may be, I can assure you than with every yes to God, there are more blessings that I can put into words. Have you said “yes” lately?

There is a new Alpaca Shopping Mall, Auction feature and social media access.

The best part about the website is that was built by volunteers and Quechua Benefit saved a lot of money. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Conclusions:

- The Dental Campaign :Goals excelled themselves, the people remember previous campaigns of Quechua Benefit and I promised that we will be realized every year

- The population beneficiary was the Quechua language in 100 %

- The campaign turned out to be small opposite to the great need. Probably we should think about two campaigns for Puno

- Quechuan Benefit strengthened his institutional image in the south of the Peru
